MV Geoasia spuds a maiden borehole offshore Trengganu
Kemaman, 3 August 2012 – The Malaysian-flagged dedicated geotechnical soil boring vessel MV Geoasia spuds it first borehole today in offshore Trengganu. After weeks of sea-trials and marine inspection by clients, the vessel departed Kemaman Supply Base (KSB) to undertake a soil boring campaign comprising drilling, sampling and testing of subsoil for jack-up rig foundation studies. The vessel has a total of 36 marine and geotechnical crews and consumables (fuel, water and food provisions) sufficient for an endurance of 30 days without a port call.
The project area is located some 25 nautical miles of KSB with average water depth at the drilling locations of 70m.
Registered in Labuan, the MV Geoasia has both the four point anchoring and dynamically positioning (DP) mooring systems to ensure good station-keeping for ease of drilling. The vessel is currently equipped with a marine drill rig called the AG-25 capable of handling some 275m of API drill pipes. Drilling is carried out over a 3.6m x 3.5m centre moonpool.
The construction of a new drill rig called the AG-1800 will be completed in 3rd Quarter 2012. The deepwater-capable new drill rig will be permanently installed on the vessel.
The vessel will continue to be used by Asian Geos group of companies to undertake offshore geotechnical investigation in Malaysia and Asia Pacific region. She may also be deployed to work on a global basis including in deepwater as dictated by projects.
